Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer is not happy with the Indian Premier League’s ‘Impact Player’ rule. Jaffer took to Twitter to explain his issues with the rule, that was introduced in the competition in the previous season.

The former batter said that IPL should take away the rule as it hampers the use of all-rounders. Jaffer argued that due to the use of the rule in domestic cricket as well, India might struggle to create a good supply line of all-rounders in the future.

“I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it’s not encouraging the all rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket,” Jaffer wrote on Twitter.

The Impact Player rule was imported from the Australian Big Bash League and tried and tested in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy ahead of the IPL 2023. The rule reduced the team’s reliance on all-rounders because they could just use specialist bowlers/batters by substituting a player.

According to the Law, teams can change one player in the middle of the game to suit the conditions of the match and the ground better in their favour.

The Impact Player was introduced at any of the following stages in an IPL Match:

1. Before the start of the innings
2. After an over finishes
3. At the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires
4. In between an over

Tushar Deshpande became the first impact player in the competition’s history after he was brought in for Ambati Rayudu in IPL 2023 opener between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.
