The upcoming edition of the Summer Olympics is set to begin in Paris, France on July 26 this month. This year’s edition of the sporting extravaganza will see the participation of more than 10,000 athletes who will compete in 329 medal events from 206 countries. The Summer Olympics will be conducted across 17 days with the sporting fest coming to a close next month on August 11. Over the years, the Olympics has evolved with the introduction of several sports. This year the sporting mega fest will introduce Breaking or Breakdancing. Sport Climbing, skateboarding and surfing will also be making their debuts this year.
The Stade de France will be transformed into the Olympic Stadium this summer. Located in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis, the venue has hosted several significant sporting events in the last 30 years. These events include the World Athletics Championships and the Rugby World Cups.
Indian athletes will also be looking to make new records and win their highest tally of medals this year. India currently boasts a total of 35 Olympic medals in history. The nation’s first-ever Individual Olympic gold was won by Abhinav Bindra in 2008 in Beijing. Their drought of a gold medal was ended recently after Neeraj Chopra found success in a Javelin Throw event. He achieved the feat at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to become the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal in the sporting festival.
This year India enjoys a strong contingent with multiple favourites. Olympic gold winner Chopra, ace shuttlers including PV Sindhu and the men’s duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and the men’s hockey team have a solid chance of winning medals in Paris.
