Emma Raducanu, on Wednesday, January 3, made her way through to the main draw of the women’s singles in the Australian Open 2023.
The 21-year-old, who recently made her comeback since last playing back in April 2023, was set to take part in the qualifiers of the hard-court tournament at the Rod Laver Arena. However, the British sensation entered the main draw after Lauren Davis of the United States of America (USA) pulled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury.
Raducanu, who became the only qualifier to win a Grand Slam when she triumphed in the US Open 2023, is currently taking part in the ASB Classic in Auckland. In her comeback match, she defeated Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the Round of 32 match on Tuesday, January 2.
Raducanu will next be up against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who had a stupendous 2023 after also beating World No.1 Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, in the second round.
The Canada-born Raducanu, in the meantime, was over the moon after beating Ruse following her return to tennis. The youngster, however, admitted that she had to face challenges while being out of the sport for around eight months.
“It’s difficult after having such a long hiatus. I’m grateful to be healthy and able to move my body.. Not bedridden or in a wheel chair. It’s amazing to be out here and playing. I’m just really happy to be back on the tour. Can’t wait to start this season and carry on, hopefully injury free and healthy,” Raducanu said.
