As Manchester United played out another disappointing 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, former full-back Gary Neville shared his belief that even top talents like Jude Bellingham would have struggled in United’s “current culture”.
The draw meant that United are currently seventh in the table, eight points off the final Champions League spot. Bellingham was once a target of the Red Devils during his time at Birmingham but now finds himself lifting the Supercopa Espana with Real Madrid.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said that Bellingham made the right choice to stay away from United.
“Other players who have chosen other clubs have gone on to be really successful. You think of Jude Bellinghamâæ well done to him, chose Borussia Dortmund and he’s now one of the greatest players in the world and greatest English talents.” Gary Neville said on United’s condition.
During the Sky Sports post-match show of United’s stalemate against Spurs on Sunday, Neville admitted to giving “poor advice” to youngsters who were linked with a move to United. Neville made another strong prediction of Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs securing a final league position above United.
“I have spoken to players before they come here saying, ‘You’ll never regret it, it’s a magic football club’. Looking back, that’s pretty poor advice.” Neville added.
So far in Manchester United’s 2023-24 campaign, the team’s prospects have been forgettable. Their last chance for a trophy now rests in the FA Cup, following early exits from the UEFA Champions League and the Carabao Cup. Apart from their poor performances on the field, United boss Erik ten Hag has additionally had to deal with a problem-filled dressing room and the Jadon Sancho saga has been a perfect example of that.
With many big names like Rasmus Hojlund and Antony struggling to make an impact in United following their big money moves, Neville believes it was the best of fates that led to current Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham snubbing a move to the Red Devils and picking Borussia Dortmund instead.
“What would have happened to him if he came here? I don’t know, maybe he would have been a success because he’s so good, but I’m not so sure because of the current culture and environment and what’s been happening.” Neville added.
On Sunday, Marcus Rashford scored for United, but he’s still facing criticism for his performances. With key players not delivering and United in seventh place in the Premier League, manager Ten Hag is under scrutiny, especially highlighted by Gary Neville.
