Bangladesh fast bowler Maruf Mridha was reprimanded after he was found guilty of breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct during the match against Uday Saharan’s India on Saturday, January 20 in the U19 World Cup 2024 at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

The left-arm speedster was guilty of not following Article 2.5 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match.”

In the 44th over of the Indian innings, Mridha got carried away and gave Indian wicketkeeper Aravelly Avanish a fiery send-off after dismissing him.

It happened to be Mridha’s first offence in a period of 24 months and one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record.

Mridha pleaded guilty to the sanctions proposed by Shaid Wadvalla, the match referee and hence, a formal hearing wasn’t needed. Donovan Koch and Nigel Duguid, the on-field umpires, Allahudien Paleker, the third umpire and Langton Rusere, the fourth umpire, leveled the charges.

MARUF MRIDHA SHINES FOR BANGLADESH

Mridha had a memorable outing with the ball after he finished with figures of 8-1-43-5. Apart from Aravelly, he also got the wickets of Arshin Kulkarni, Musheer Khan, Priyanshu Moliya and Murugan Abhishek.

On the back of his spell, Bangladesh restricted India to 251 for 7 in 50 overs. But his efforts went in vain as the Junior Tigers lost by 84 runs after being bowled out for 167 in 45.5 overs.

After losing to India, Bangladesh made a comeback by beating Ireland by 6 wickets. Maruf finished with figures of 8-0-45-2. Chasing 236, Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby’s men romped home with 17 balls to spare.

Bangladesh’s last Group match is against the United States on Friday, January 26 in Bloemfontein.
