Australia beat West Indies by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series and it took them just over two days to secure victory at the Adelaide Oval.

At Stumps of Day 2, the Caribbean team was in danger of losing by an innings as they were trailing by 25 runs with four wickets in hand.

At 94 for nine in their second innings, they were still in danger of an innings defeat. However, Kemar Roach and Shamarh Joseph put on 26 runs for the last wicket to make sure that Australia were set a target of 26 to chase down in their second innings.

Josh Hazlewood picked up five wickets and helped Australia bowl West Indies out for 120 in 35.2 overs. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon also accounted for two scalps apiece.

In front of nearly 17000 people present at the venue, Australia romped home in 6.4 overs. Steve Smith stayed not out on 11 runs off 22 balls with two fours.

However, in their run-chase, Australia suffered a blow after Usman Khawaja had to retire hurt on nine. In the seventh over, a nasty bounce from Joseph hit Khawaja on the helmet. Holding the left side of the cheek bone, he walked off the park.

Marnus Labuschagne hit the winning runs in the same over as Australia raced to a comprehensive victory. Travis Head became the Player of the Match after he scored 119 runs off 134 balls in the first innings.

The second and final Test is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, January 25 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
