Rohan Bopanna is 43 years old, but age doesn’t seem to bother the veteran from India by any means. The tennis star is a win away from becoming the World No.1 in doubles. Currently, taking part in the Australian Open 2024, Bopanna is already through to the quarterfinals along with Matthew Ebden.

On Tuesday, January 22, Bopanna and Ebden will be up against the Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.

Bopanna said that he is not a “journeyman” and rather someone who competes to win titles. He also credited his full-time physio, Rebecca Van Orshaegen, for making sure that he doesn’t become “lazy”.

“There are a few guys who are playing on the circuit born even after I became a pro, but I’m just happy where I am,” Bopanna was quoted as saying to The Guardian.

Bopanna focussing on recovery and mobility

“I’m not really just being a journeyman, I’m somebody competing for the titles, playing at the highest level, and I don’t think there is any reason to stop.”

“There are days where I take a complete day off, but I need to make sure I’m recovering, doing my mobilities, and that is where Rebecca has played a huge part in making sure I’m not being lazy,” Bopanna said.

Bopanna said that playing with Ebden for a prolonged period of time has helped him immensely.

“What I can bring on the court is maybe not the foot speed, but I can bring that mental strength. And playing with one partner.”

Last year, Bopanna became the oldest doubles finalist after he qualified for the US Open final along with Ebden. The duo also progressed to the semi-final of Wimbledon.

Earlier, Bopanna assured himself a No.2 ranking after beating 14th seeds Nikola Mektic and Wesley Koolhoof 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4) at the Kia Arena.
