Shubman Gill has shared an incredible throwback image alongside Virat Kohli with a heartwarming message after he won the Polly Umrigar award at the BCCI Awards ceremony on January 23, Wednesday.

Gill won the prestigious award for the first time in his career after a spectacular 2023. The young batter amassed a remarkable 1,584 runs at an average of 63.36 and a strike rate of 105.45 in 29 ODI matches, which included five centuries.

BCCI Awards Highlights

His prowess in the ODI format was further highlighted by his record-breaking feat of becoming the fastest cricketer to reach 2,000 ODI runs, achieving this milestone in just 38 innings. Gill also ended up scoring more than 2000 runs for India in all formats of the game during the calendar year.

After winning the award, Gill shared a throwback image with Kohli, at a time when the star batter was selected as the men’s cricketer of the year. In his post, Gill said that he had so much nostalgia on the day as he came as a 14-year-old and met with his idols.

Gill said that seeing Kohli win the award was motivation for him to go a step further in his career.

“So much nostalgia, from coming here when i was 14 and meeting my idols and legends for the first time. Watching Virat bhai win cricketer of the year was something I would never forget. Pure motivation for me to go a step further and give everything for my country this year,” said Gill.

Kohli will miss the first two Tests against England while Gill is expected to start

While Gill is expected to be a starter for India in the opener of the Test series against England, starting from January 25, Kohli will be skipping the first two matches.

The star batter decided to pull out of the games in Hyderabad and Vizag due to personal reasons and is expected to be part of the side from the third match.
