Chelsea’s reliable and seasoned centre-back, Thiago Silva, dropped a significant hint regarding his future career, expressing that with each game, his tenure at the West London club is drawing to a close.
At the age of 39, Silva has emerged as one of the standout performers for Chelsea, a team facing considerable challenges in the 2023-24 Premier League season. With his contract set to expire in June, questions arise about the possibility of his departure or potential retirement from the game, with no indication of Chelsea management offering him an extension.
“I don’t have anything scheduled for later. There’s nothing scheduled here. I’m just looking to have fun,” Thiago Silva said about his future.
Following Chelsea’s 6-1 victory over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup semi-final on Wednesday, January 24, the Brazilian expressed that he is yet to decide the next step in career path post the expiration of his contract. Acknowledging the fact that he is close to his retirement age, he emphasised dedicating his focus to the potentially final few days with the Blues.
“It’s different and special and emotional. I know that with each game that ends I have a feeling that it’s ending, so that makes me a little sad. But happy with the performance on the field, which is the most important.” Silva added.
The former Brazil National Team skipper did not shy away from acknowledging his impressive statistics during his tenure at Chelsea. This recognition instils in him a sense of self-belief and motivation to perform well.
“I’m still able to maintain a good performance. My numbers are good. This gives me peace of mind to continue. Now, the future belongs to God,” Silva added
Silva remains crucial for the Blues under Mauricio Pochettino, playing in 20 out of 21 Premier League games this season despite his age. However, there have been multiple reports that the team is looking for a younger option to replace him at the end of the season.
One of the top names that is being considered as Silva’s most likely heir in the current squad is Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen, who has been one of the most prominent names in the unbeaten German squad under former midfielder turned coach Xabi Alonso.
