David Warner said that he is ‘going to be available’ if Australia need him to come out of retirement for the Champions Trophy 2025 to be staged in Pakistan. On Monday, January 1, Warner started the New Year by announcing his retirement from ODIs.
The southpaw said that bidding goodbye to ODIs was in his mind when he was taking part in the World Cup 2023. Warner was Australia’s leading run-scorer in the mega event with a top score of 163 against Babar Azam’s Pakistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
The left-handed batter, however, understands the need of an established top order batter in a tournament as big as the Champions Trophy.
“I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up and if I’m playing decent cricket still in two years’ time, and they need someone, I’m going to be available,” Warner was quoted as saying in a press conference in Sydney.
Warner also said that it’s high time that he devoted more time to his beloved wife Candice and their three daughters, Indi, Ivy and Isla.
After retiring from both Tests and ODIs, Warner said that he will now put his focus on playing in domestic T20 leagues and commentary.
“I definitely am keen to pursue playing Big Bash next year. There’s going to be conversations behind the scenes to allow me to do that,” Warner said.
“Obviously I’ve joined the Fox commentary team next year during the Test series against India, which I’m looking forward to. There’s a BBL window that we’re able to play, and then quite clearly there has been a lot of talk about the ILT20 which will be starting, I’m pretty sure, after the BBL,” he added.
Warner is now set to take part in his farewell Test match, which is scheduled to get underway on December 3 at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.
