Australia captain Pat Cummins has reacted to the all-rounder Glenn Maxwell getting hospitalised after a late-night party in Adelaide. Maxwell, who is currently rested from the Australian squad, was admitted to the hospital on Friday, 19 January in an incident that involved alcohol.
The World Cup star did not stay in the hospital overnight and has already resumed training ahead of the T20I series against the West Indies, starting February 9, the Australian media reported ahead of the second Test match.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Maxwell was out drinking at a concert in Adelaide and was taken in an ambulance to a hospital where he received treatment. The exact nature of the health concern has not yet been identified.
Asked about the incident in the press conference the Australia captain said that Maxwell has to own his decisions and be comfortable with them. Back in 2022, Maxwell fractured his leg in multiple places while attending a private party right after Australia’s exit from the T20 World Cup.
“We’re all adults, been part of night outings, you have got to make your own decisions. I suppose in this actual incident, he was obviously not on tour with the Australians, he was over there for a private event, he was not with the cricket team. So, it is a little bit different. Absolutely, any decision that you make, you have got to own it and be comfortable with it,” Cummins said in a press conference ahead of Australia’s second Test match at the iconic Gabba.
Cricket Australia came out with a statement about the incident and clarified that the incident as not the reason behind Maxwell being rested from the ODI series which will be played between February 2-6.
“Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information,” a statement said. It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series. No further comment will be made at this time.”
