India dominated England on Day 1 of the first Test match in Hyderabad on Thursday, 25 January at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. After bowling out the Ben Stokes’ side for 246 runs, India dominated the final session of the day, courtesy of youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hit 76 off just 70 balls.

Jaiswal remained unbeaten at the end of Day 1 and helped India 119 runs on board in just 23 overs for the loss of one wicket. Jaiswal was especially punishing on debutant spinner Tom Hartley, who he hit for a six in the very first ball of the latter’s Test career.

No Respite for England on Day 1

Atherton lauded the young India batter and said that he put England on the back foot. Speaking on Sky Sports Atherton said that it was a tough start to the Test series for the Ben Stokes’ side.

“It was a great day of cricket. It was a tough day for England, they definitely came off second best today, in particular, because of what happened right at the end of the day when the young lad Jaiswal really played aggressively,” Atherton told Sky Sports at the end of Day 1 in Hyderabad.

“He really got stuck in to Tom Hartley on debut, an inexperienced player, but it was a definite attempt to get after Hartley on debut,” Atherton further added.

Jaiswal hit 9 boundaries and 3 sixes on Day 1 of the Test match and is nearing his second Test century. He would start the day with Shubman Gill, who remained unbeaten at 14 runs off 43 balls.

Atherton called Jaiswal a confident batter and said that he did not let Tom Hartley ease into his Test career.

“Jaiswal, England supporters and bowlers won’t have seen as much of him. They got a look at him today and he looks a really confident young lad. He played with real confidence and poise today and just took the game on,” Atherton said.

“Seizing the moment, putting England on the back foot. Stokes would have loved for Hartley to ease his way in on debut but Jaiswal had other ideas,” concluded the former cricketer on the matter.
