Shubman Gill said that he did not want to go back to opening the batting when he was going through a rough patch in his career. Prior to the series against England, Gill was finding it tough to get amongst the runs.
Since the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia, Gill had failed to score a single half-century. With his place in the Test team under the scanner, Gill found his feet and has scored over 400 runs in the ongoing series.
“When you don’t score, you tend to think a lot of times, which I was thinking. But going back to opening was not something that came in my mind,” Gill was quoted as saying to the broadcasters. | IND vs ENG, 5th Test scorecard
‘I know how to pace my innings’
Gill averages only 20.72 when India bat first in Tests. In the 3rd and 4th innings respectively, he averages over 40, giving an account of his temperament.
“When I go out to bat in the second innings, I know what target I am chasing. I know how to pace my innings and how to go about it,” he stated.
Gill also talked about how several Indian cricketers have made their debuts for India since he started playing for the national team 5 years ago.
“It definitely feels different from when I came into the team. Now there are many players who are younger than me, and it’s exciting,” Gill added.
As far as the series against England is concerned, Gill struggled in the Hyderabad Test after he got scores of 23 and 0. But after scoring 104 in the 2nd innings of the Vizag Test, he kept growing in stature.
Although he got a duck in the first innings of the Rajkot Test, he made up for it with a 91-run knock in the second. With scores of 38 and 52 not out in Ranchi, the Fazilka-born batter continued his good run of form.
