Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka has been ruled out of the 3rd and final ODI against Bangladesh. He is also set to miss the first few matches for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
The speedster sustained an injury to his left hamstring during the 2nd match on Friday, March 15 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury in Chattogram.
In the series against the Tigers, Madushanka picked up 4 wickets at an economy rate of 5.04. In both games, he got the wicket of Litton Das, who was left out of the Bangladesh squad for the 3rd ODI, scheduled to take place on March 18. The speedster will return to his rehabilitation after an MRI scan confirmed his injury.
“Dilshan Madushanka will not further take part in the ongoing tour as the bowler will return to start rehabilitation work after suffering an injury during the 2nd ODI. Madushanka, who left the field during the second ODI while bowling, has suffered a left hamstring injury, as confirmed by an MRI scan performed on the player,” a statement from SLC read.
Concern for Mumbai Indians
Madushanka was picked to play for MI after his impressive showing in the ODI World Cup on Indian soil last year. The left-arm speedster picked up 21 wickets from 8 matches with a 5-wicket haul to his name, although Sri Lanka could not make it through to the semi-final.
In the auction for IPL 2024, Madushanka had a base price of INR 50 lakhs. MI were involved in a bidding war with KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before buying him at a price of INR 4.60 crore.
Apart from Madushanka, MI also have Jason Behrendorff and Nuwan Thushara as their overseas pace bowling options.
MI’s first match of IPL 2024 is against Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans on Sunday, March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
