Napoli’s Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has ignited fresh speculation about his departure from the Italian side after the striker declared that he has already made up his mind about his next career move.
Despite signing a contract extension with the Napoli till 2026, less than a month ago, Osimhen, during an interview with CBS’ Morning Footy, revealed that he already has his “end of the season” plans finalised amidst strong interest from multiple English Premier League teams.
“At the end of the season, I think I already made up my mind. I already know what I wanna do with my career…So for now I just want to finish the season strong, go relax somewhere with my daughter, and then finally come up with the decision I’ve already made,” Victor Osimhen told CBS about transfer rumours.
The 25-year-old Osimhen gained widespread attention following his remarkable performance in the 2022-23 season for the Italian side. He emerged as the club’s top scorer, netting 36 goals in 39 appearances across various competitions, being one of the leading force in their Serie A title win after a long 33-year wait. Since then, the striker has been attracting significant interest throughout the continent, for all the right reasons.
His impressive goal-scoring stats have caught the attention of top European clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, all trying to rope in the player in the near future, which has been looking increasingly likely in the past few months.
“I think 60% of everyone are arguing, or the rumor is going around about me linked the Premier League. But…when you are one of the hottest striker in the globe, you play this type of thing,” Victor Osimhen added.
During his conversation with CBS, Osimhen did not shy off from acknowledging the growing speculations related to his transfer, even addressing a ‘most likely’ move to the Premier League. The striker went on to acknowledge the English league’s status amongst the top leagues in the world. However, the player insisted that he is currently enjoying his time in the Azzurri shirt and is prioritising “going through it with the team”.
“Of course, EPL is one of the biggest leagues in the whole world. Now I’m with Napoli, I signed a new contract, I’m enjoying my time there, going through it with the team…” Osimhen added.
During the current season, the striker’s relationship with Napoli has encountered several bumpers. One such instance occurred when he was substituted for Giovanni Simeone in a Serie A clash against Bologna. This led to the player expressing frustration and directing angry words at the now-sacked coach, Rudi Garcia. These incidents raised speculation about the striker’s potential departure from the club. However, contrary to expectations, he later signed a contract extension just a few months later.
Osimhen has been one of Napoli’s better performers during a disastrous 2023-2024 season, scoring 7 goals in his 13 appearances in Serie A and one goal in the UEFA Champions League. Napoli are currently ninth in the Serie A table, with a 1-0 defeat in the Supercoppa Italiana final against rivals Inter Milan on Tuesday, January 23.
