Jasprit Bumrah, on Thursday, January 4, picked up his ninth five-wicket haul in Test cricket to rattle the South African batting lineup in the second Test at the Newlands in Cape Town.

India vs South Africa, 2nd Test Live Updates

Bumrah achieved the feat inside the first hour of the opening session on Day 2 of the match. In the final session of Day 1, Bumrah got the wicket of debutant Tristan Stubbs, who got out both times to the Indian speedster.

On Day 2, Bumrah accounted for the wickets of David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj to notch the five-wicket haul.

Bumrah is currently third in the list of leading wicket-takers for India in Tests against South Africa. Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath with 45 and 43 wickets respectively, are India’s top two bowlers in the African country.

Bumrah also equalled Srinath’s record of most five-wicket hauls (3) by an Indian bowler in South Africa. He is also one of the five Indian bowlers along with Srinath, Mohammed Shami, Venkatesh Prasad and Sreesanth to get multiple five-wicket hauls in South Africa.

In the first innings of the Cape Town Test, Bumrah was equally effective after he finished with figures of 8-1-25-2. Picking up the wickets of Stubbs and Nandre Burger, Bumrah gave Mohammed Siraj support. Siraj ran riot in the first innings after he picked up six wickets.

Back in 2018, Bumrah made his Test debut in South Africa, and he hasn’t looked back in his career. The speedster is also nearing the landmark of 150 wickets in Tests. Last year, Bumrah returned to playing cricket after recovering from a back injury and played a crucial role in India advancing to the final of World Cup 2023.
